The sequined flags of Haiti evolved out of flags that were representative of both African tribal life, when presented to indiginous African peoples by Portugese, French, Danish and Dutch missioinaries beginning in the year 1491. When slaves were brought to Haiti, they brought the superstition and symbolism of their beliefs and melded them with those of their European captors. This melding of religious rituals and iconism is represented in the images of Haitian Drapos. Once used only as ritual flags, they are now considered a desirable art form to the point where atiliers dedicated to this craft have opened a new trade for the impoverished society. Through the sale of these flags we are hoping to assist our friend, Kurk Lyons, who has graciously supplied these gorgeous works for us to show and sell. They will liven up ANY decor! The frames are all hand-beaded using mardi-gras beads and filled with grout by my husband Paul. They are extremly time-consuming to build and worth much more than we are asking but we would like to sell these flags so that we may order more soon. Enjoy!! THESE FLAGS ARE VERY HARD TO PHOTOGRAPH SO THESE PICTURES DON'T DO THEM JUSTICE. THEY ARE ALL VERY BRIGHT AND GLIMMERING !!!

FLAGS BY MAXON SCYLLA MAXON, the brother in law of famed drapo artist Antoine Oleyant, worked under him and managed his atelier, from which he inherited Antoine's designs. Maxon has perfected these graphic images and added his own intuitive color palette, making them his alone. His imagery is bold and easily recognizable among artisans in this fine medium. Some are framed with beads, some in hand painted wood. Frames custom made by Paul Bolton.
