DOCTOR BOB

"In the Bywater, a supply store sported spray-painted signs reading "You Loot, I Shoot" and "You Bein Watched." A man seated nearby with a rifle in his lap suggested it was no idle threat. At the Bywater studio of Dr. Bob, the artist known for handpainted "Be Nice or Leave" signs, a less fanciful sentiment was painted on the wall: "Looters Will Be Shot. Dr. Bob."

Dr. Bob is one of New Orleans "Elite" who's work was chosen for the House of Blues venue in New Orleans, his "BE NICE OR LEAVE" signs have become a New Orleans icon. Made from recycled trash can lids, old metal trays and whatever else Bob can find, these colourful signs are a welcome addition to any folk/outsider art collection as are his other Louisianna themed paintings!
Dr. Bob has been commissioned to participate in numerous art installations, including one at the CENTER for SOUTHERN FOLKLORE in Memphis Tennessee.

The above photo's were taken on Easter 2003 at Dr. Bob's place. He was gracious enough to keep the gates open for our evening visit and it was definitely a trip worth taking!

His studio is located on the Mississippi River and through his "window on the world" we watched a huge ship pass within yards! Our son, Dakota was thrilled with the whole experience..........and he's finally getting to meet people with as much art on their walls as we have!

Bob's studio is kid friendly, but Bob himself is full of great stories of his life in the swamp and other "adventures" of an adult nature!
