JANE
"In Vain" WINKELMAN
Jane uses haunting imagery to get
her message across, and it's as clear as a slap in the face..."we're
all around you, if you would only just open your eyes and see us...
We're the hopeless, the helpless, the homeless, those of us who cannot
function within the demands of everyday society. We are not equipped
emotionally, mentally, physically, not capable of dealing with the
pressures of daily life."
They are ridiculed, shunned, cast aside and passed
over. Jane's hope is that through her intricate and disturbing images
you will be moved to listen to her message.
Jane has been on the fringes of homelessness before,
in the unforgiving streets of San Francisco's Tenderloin district.
It was there that she found her purpose. Through a dear friend she
was led to the free art program offered by Hospitality House, a place
where SF's homeless and needy can feel safe and nurtured. From there,
her incredible works gained recognition on the cover of the Street
Sheet, the homeless coalition's newspaper, and on Market Street kiosks.
Next, she was commissioned by Absolut to do a SF based vodka ad. That
work was exhibited alongside such notables as Keith Haring, Andy Warhol,
and Leroy Neiman in the "Absolut Art Exhibit" in 1994.
Jane is included in the book CONTEMPORARY FOLK ART, A COLLECTORS
GUIDE by Chuck and Jan Rosenak. The piece featured is now in the National
Museum of American Art, Smithsonian. She is also in Betty Carol Sellen's
newest book; SELF TAUGHT, OUTSIDER AND FOLK ART, A Guide to American
Artists, Locations and Resources, THE ABSOLUT BOOK, has been shown
in The Online Investor magazine, Raw Vision magazine, and has been
recently featured in the AMERICAN VISIONARY MUSEUM'S ERROR & EROS
exhibit. Jane has also recieved superlative reviews from Robert L.
Pincus for her show "Urban Diaries" and was featured in
the Russian/American paper "WE/MBL in the US and Russia. Jane's
latest efforts are included in the book "THE VIEW FROM HERE"
published by the San Francisco Coalition on Homelessness. Her full-sized
mixed media paintings sell for thousands of dollars.
In spite of these many acolades, she has since only
held her head above water through sales of her art and the generosity
of friends, but she lives day to day and her future is never certain.
Jane's dream right now is to have an exibition so
that many can view her body of work and consider it's meaning, instead
of selling them to live, before they are viewed. We hope that by selling
her smaller pieces here we can help her accomplish her goal in the
near future..
